Delivering on the 2030 Vision by Building More Productive Workflows

In 2019, MovieLabs – a technology joint venture of the major motion picture studios – released the groundbreaking “Evolution of Media Creation, a 10-year vision for the future of Media Production, Post and Creative Technologies”. The paper quickly became known as the “2030 Vision” and it rallied the industry toward a shared vision where creative teams can focus more on being creative and less on wrestling files, metadata and technologies that should be in service of their work.

MovieLabs is now working on the next phase in implementing the 2030 Vision – and we’re partnering with organizations across the industry to build real working examples of the Vision in action.

We call it 2030 Greenlight, and we have brought together industry-leading technology and service providers to build and deploy interoperable technology solutions which directly address the challenges faced by filmmakers today. We’re using the 2030 Vision as a guide to build solutions where applications and tools seamlessly connect together and where creatives can focus on the tasks they need to do instead of organizing, preparing, moving, transforming and manipulating data.

We are breaking the entire workflow down into smaller more managable scenarios that are real-world challenges or opportunities for improvement.  These are identified by by creative teams and the architecture vetted by the leading companies in the MovieLabs Industry Forum Leadership Counsel.

We’re publishing the results here as we complete each Scenario by publishing a video case study and documenting our work, providing an honest assessment of what went well, where the industry needs to improve and which benefits we have delivered for Creative Teams.

Filmmakers, production companies or indisivual artists can propose a 2030 Greenlight scenario by Emailing MovieLabs. If you represent a company looking to build out innovation solutions to help with 2030 Greenlight we encourage you to join the MovieLabs Industry Forum.

Greenlight Scenarios 1-3
Scenario 1 – Completed

Covers a late change in a script and how it affects both production planning but also shot preparation for VFX assets used for Virtual Production that will be imapcted by the change.

Scenario 2 – In Progress

The identification of a shot that needs a reshoot, identifying all of the impacted equipment, cast and crew and planning the new shoot.

Scenario 3 – In Planning Now

Scenario 3 will cover post production challenges including changes to the primary editorial timeline and how audio and video pipeline elements can stay in synchronization as the production proceeds through post.

Scenario 1 – Late Breaking Script Change

The first Scenario that we addressed in 2030 Greenlight was when a late breaking change in the script occurs.  This is a frequent occurence before or even during shoots and can trigger major disruptions across production.

We used the assets from the Entertainment Technology Center @ USC production “Europa” as a production which had this challenge,  In their case they needed to add a scene which would require new VFX assets for use on a virtual production wall.  With only 10 days before principal photography every hour counted as the VFX vendor needed to know which scene needed to be added, generate new concept art, visualize a new 3D scene and get approval for the extra work.

Our work on Scenario 1 showed how the 2030 Vision can enable a script change such as this to ripple seamlessly through production, not causing stress but triggering approvals from humans and a waves of automated and generation of GenAI assets.  The video case study shows how the scenario unfolded and how applications used every day by creatives can be integrated to create a true “2030 Workflow” that shaved hours and days out of this high stress situation.

Scenario 2 – Late Breaking Script Change

Scenario 2 addressess the challenges of reshoots.  When a director decides that a reshoot is necessary today a barrage of logistical challemges is unleashed – can we get the onscreen talent back, which scene/script/shots need to be recreated, where are those assets in the timeline, can we get the exact same equipment, setup and sets back?  In Scenario 2 we demonstrate how those tasks can be automated and dramatically simplified.

Building on the same project as Scenario 1 we’re building interoperability and intelligent automation so that a director can seamlessly search using natural language descrprtions of production or narrative phrases to review sequences in a dailies or editorial platforms.  If they decide that they need a sequence reshot they can trigger automations which find all the required clips, the equipment (cameras, lenses etc), the locations and the associated cast and crew required for a reshoot, and even automatically propose available dates when they can all be scheduled.

Scenario 2 is being built in the Summer of 2025 and will be demonstrated live in Fall 2025.
