We’ve released a non-breaking update to the MovieLabs Ontology for Media Creation, and we’re now up to version 2.8 with some additional features that just couldn’t wait until v3.0. The MovieLabs Documentation site has been updated with the latest version but here’s what you can find in the latest version:
Collections
We’ve added a new concept of collections which allows implementors to define custom groups of data that do not fit into existing OMC entities. There are many use cases for Collections which is why we brought the release forward so people can start using it now before the next full release. Collections can be used for example to define a custom package of elements from script and pre-production elements that need to be made available to post services, or as a custom metadata package as a rider for an asset package transfer to a vendor.
We’ll have much more to say about why this such a powerful concept and how it can be applied in a future blog series.
Computer Graphics
OMC assets extend textures with support for UDIM and adding shaders including OpenPBR.
Management of Custom Data
Management of Custom Data has been improved to support easier ways for vendors, applications, and workflows to incorporate their domain specific custom data within OMC structures.
New Validator
Our OMC Validator has also been updated so that it now supports code checking for all these new features.
Coming later in 2026. we’ll have our next major release – OMC v3.0. And we have drafting groups of industry experts working now add to add detail as we expand OMC into the full video pipeline from capture to post and handoffs into VFX, mastering and distribution. Stay Tuned!
