MovieLabs Specification for Enhanced Content Protection
Creating and distributing content involves significant investment by content providers and distributors that can be jeopardized by infringement. This is especially true of 4K, HDR and premium window content. Along with the technologies enabling Next Generation Video, the technologies for protecting content against unlicensed use have also evolved significantly in recent years.
In 2013, to improve the protection of the industry's creative investments, MovieLabs published a high-level specification defining the key elements that can serve as the basis for individual studio protection requirements for new content distribution formats and platforms.
The “MovieLabs Specification for Enhanced Content Protection,” which covers these content protection features, was developed in conjunction with the “MovieLabs Specification for Next Generation Video”, which covers video features. The ECP specification is updated as necessary as threats and technologies evolve. The latest version, 1.2, was published in August 2018.
These documents are intended solely as a guide for companies interested in developing products which can be compatible with other products. Each member company of MovieLabs shall decide independently the extent to which it will utilize, or require adherence to, these specifications.
