Research Systems Administrator/Bit of a hacker
MovieLabs is looking for a talented individual to join a small team in Palo Alto focused on investigating technologies for distributing and monetizing movies and TV.
Description
The position is what you make of it!
If you think of yourself as someone who is flexible; a bit of a hacker; knows how to program or script; has edited a video (e.g., Final Cut); could configure Amazon S3/AWS; likes media; enjoys setting up and playing with equipment; taking on various projects, and learning new technologies please apply.
We are looking for a research assistant who has the talent to a handle individual projects in the area of media usage across the internet. Since we are a small team, the right individual will have the ability to take on more responsibility and manage interesting and diverse projects.
The ideal individual will be independent and versatile. The job is a combination assisting in diverse research projects as well as keeping the IT infrastructure of the organization going strong.
Background could be IT, media production, quality assurance or other multidisciplinary roles.
Responsibilities
The well-defined part of the position is keeping the infrastructure up and running. If done well, this is a small part of the job--the rest is projects. More specifically:
Small projects in the area of investigation of new media services and internet backbone usage
Full responsibility for MovieLabs small infrastructure: website, VOIP, and IP, internal connectivity, etc.
Troubleshoot network, software, and hardware issues on computers, servers, cloud services, and media equipment
Implementation of upgrades across equipment suite
Manage and provision cloud servers including DB admin
Purchase equipment as needed to test various configurations primarily in the area of streaming media
Configure and test multi-media equipment
Desired Experience (the more the better, but candidates are not expected to know all)
Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, FTP, P2P etc.
Understanding of network topologies
Ability to script (PHP, perl, understanding of regular expressions, etc.).
Linux admin knowledge important; cloud (EC2 or comparable) great.
DB admin a plus, as is SQL query scripting Understanding of media technology including home theater, video editing tools, etc. a strong plus
Understanding of file sharing technologies (This is one of the few jobs where knowing how to pirate video is an asset)
Senior Security Engineer/Researcher
We are looking for exceptional software engineers to join our small team working in emerging areas of digital media. This position could be based in either our Silicon Valley or Los Angeles office, and requires a moderate amount of travel.

technologies on their market and business viability. You can wax on about the shortcomings of any technology, but can also see the power and potential of each.
