MovieLabs Unveils Vision for Interoperability in Media Creation

New White Paper Lays Out Innovative Ways to Enable Creative Workflows that are Flexible Efficient and Embrace Change

San Francisco, August 30, 2023 MovieLabs, the technology joint venture of the major Hollywood motion picture studios, has released a new white paper in the 2030 Vision Series, titled “Interoperability in Media Creation” setting forth a transformative vision for the future of media production workflows as software and cloud infrastructure play a larger role in supporting creative work. The white paper provides the technical underpinnings that can revolutionize the way creative teams work by making it easier to assemble, manage, change, and secure their workflows. For creative teams, this offers more choice in their tools and processes enabling increased efficiency that gives time back for creative work.

The white paper focuses on interoperability and how it is a critical enabler for the 2030 Vision, emphasizing its increasingly pivotal role in shaping media production. Implementation of the interoperability principles in the paper can enable production teams to seamlessly integrate diverse software tools, services, and infrastructure. By achieving robust interoperability, studios and production teams can select and integrate the tools, vendors, and infrastructure that best align with each production’s unique needs, reducing the need for custom engineering and integration efforts.

  • Infrastructure Freedom: The paper advocates for interoperability across on-premises systems, public cloud, private cloud, and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings, rendering infrastructure choices transparent to end-users and enabling productions to be multi-cloud but also nimble in switching or supporting multiple infrastructures.
  • Efficiency and Automation: Improved interoperability allows for automation of repetitive tasks, faster turnarounds, and enables creative teams to focus more on storytelling and innovation and less on mundane activities.
  • Actionable Steps: The white paper concludes with a roadmap for all stakeholders, outlining measures such as adopting common data models, using open-source solutions, and enabling the reusability of workflow integrations.
